Ayahuasca

The Plant Teacher

Ayahuasca is an Amazonian plant medicine that has been used for thousands of years by indigenous people from the Amazon throughout Peru, Columbia, Ecuador and Brazil. As a medicine it cannot be compared to our Western understanding of medicine, which applies mainly to the healing of physical symptoms. Ayahuasca is a medicine that works on the physical as well as the nonphysical level: on our consciousness, our emotions, and our spirit. Ross Heaven describes it beautifully in his book about Plant Spirit Shamanism: “It is as if we are imbibing not just a liquid brew, but an “other” intelligence that knows exactly what is needed to help us.” Being a Plant Teacher, Ayahuasca offers a unique and personal experience to every person, varying from an intense experience of euphoria, to the processing and healing of deep trauma’s. Ayahuasca gives you a glimpse of your True Self, and with this the opportunity to look at yourself and the problems you are facing in daily life from a higher perspective. In our experience, Ayahuasca gives you exactly what you need (though this might be different from what you had expected), and never more than you can handle.

Why Ayahuasca

Ayahuasca can shine a light on a variety of situations in which you feel trapped, be it by life, work, or relationships; tensions, stress, grief, depression; addictions, negative beliefs, eating disorders or burnout symptoms. Ayahuasca can help you on your spiritual journey, by growing consciousness and love for your Self. We have a deep respect for the profoundness and wisdom of the medicine, but we do want to emphasize that it is not a “quick fix” for every personal problem. Ayahuasca allows us to gain more awareness of our inner world of emotions, thoughts, beliefs and behavior. This increased self-awareness is an important catalyst for personal growth, and depending on your own willingness to develop yourself according to your heart’s desires, it will definitely result in an overall improvement of your life.

Medical Guidelines

A number of medical and psychiatric conditions may be a contraindication to participation. To know what you are getting into, we strongly advise that you read the following information carefully, and to stick to the recommended preparations before you join our retreats.

  • Ayahuasca is sometimes described as a rollercoaster ride into your unconsciousness. If you wouldn’t step onto a rollercoaster in your daily life, because of a cardiovascular disorder, high blood pressure or respiratory issue, we strongly advise you not to step onto the Ayahuasca rollercoaster either, as it slightly increases blood pressure.

Diseases that could form a risk in combination with Ayahuasca are:

  • alcohol addiction
  • severe kidney or liver diseases;
  • unstable diabetes mellitus;
  • epilepsy and severe neurological disorders;
  • vascular diseases like angina pectoris, cerebral haemorrhages or strokes;
  • actual or expected pheochromocytoma;
  • an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism);
  • blood dyscrasias.
